2008 - Summary of Q1

  By _ram-jaane' on March 31, 2008 8:31 PM | No Comments

Things that happened of note:

    • My xbox360 (that I've had it over 2 years) gave me the ring of death error. I thought I managed to fix it by overheating it but this only lasted 2 days, now I've sent it back to MicroShaft for repair. Thankfully the warranty was extended to 3 years due to this issue being so 'common' with the consoles, though I'm hoping they just replace it, rather than repair it, because then the manufacture date & serial number would be updated. I'm considering trading it in (& the newer manufacture date would hold higher value). Not sure though, if I trade it in with games for a PS3 it'd be just for the blu-ray factor, but I am unsure that COD4 will hold up as great an experience on Sony's 'free' multiplayer environment. From what I've heard from people who have both, apparently it's no patch on Xbox-Live. Decision pending

I've managed to keep all the stubs of my film tickets at my local CineWorld by folding the stub backwards & waving it for the usher to glimpse rather than tear. I though I would have only lasted a month or so but I have got through all of Q1. How long will it last? We'll see.

I have a system whereby my DVD's are organised with the films I haven't seen are sticking out on the shelves, I push them in once I've watched them. The ratio of seen/unseen was quite bad & remained stationary for quite a while (months rather than weeks). Over the past month or so, I've made a point of fixing this & started actually watching them, recent films I've pushed in are: Almost Famous, The Pledge, The Lost Boys, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Three to Tango, (& The Pianist this evening, hopefully), one of these days I may even have a full shelf of pushed in films. Optimism roaring through .. again, we'll see.

At work, my site had been blocked by the BlueCoat application they were using to filter out blogs and personal pages that aren't "work-related", this did take a knock on my readership from fellow colleagues, however this week it has been re-classified by the software as "Arts & Entertainment" meaning it's unblocked again. I'm not sure if this is my doing (renamed blog to blargh) or if my begging to Tech Services guys at work actually yielded some pity, perhaps a bit of both, but anyway -- end result, I'm Back for your lunch-time entertainment! ;)

My lame-ass attempt at a webcomic finally formulated after I went to the UKWebComixThing and saw a large number of such examples. I figured I should give it a shot since I've been going on about it for almost a decade now. I'm cheating by using screen captures, but I'm a child of divorce, give me a break. I've put the first one up, but since I'm not in the swing of regular updates, I'm not making any promises or publishing it as all-out public quite yet, just a sneak peak.

Somebody I work with, (though not directly), turned out he has 4 novels under his belt, a couple of which have become screenplays, all under my nose. He even has his own little WikiPedia article: (Darren Smith). Naturally, I made contact as soon as I found this out & discussed aims, aspirations & he made the same point that I keep making to myself, do some more work, get it done, get it done completely.

Which brings me to the 'online' screenplay, I still intend on getting it done by end of year, but the weekly updates are unrealistic, I feel. It seems to come in bursts & not of just 3 pages, plus I'm focussing more on another project at the moment which I'm going to remain tight-lipped about. Just keep an eye on the file if you're interested. I'll try & mention when I do upload an update in the posts.

  • From my new year aims, I'd say I'm doing more than 50%, but I could be doing more. I've read 1 book a month & stuck with the weekly word idea, so I'm reasonably happy with the way things are progressing especially with the film festival seasons coming up ahead ... :) ..but I do have that inner nagging that I could be doing 'more'.

I may do a separate post for the film releases of Q1 & what I saw/missed next week some time.
